{"id":1381,"date":"2020-08-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-29T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tutor.engoo.com\/blog\/?p=1381"},"modified":"2021-11-17T04:23:43","modified_gmt":"2021-11-17T04:23:43","slug":"typhoons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tutor.engoo.com\/blog\/teaching-conversation\/typhoons\/","title":{"rendered":"Conversation Topic: Typhoons \ud83c\udf00\ud83c\udf00\ud83c\udf00"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Besides hot, sticky weather, summer brings one other phenomenon to East Asia: <strong>typhoons.<\/strong> What does this mean for our students?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below you\u2019ll find some questions you may want to ask as well as words and phrases (bolded) that you may want to teach when discussing this topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are Typhoons?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Readers from other parts of the world may be more familiar with the terms, \u201c<strong>hurricane<\/strong>\u201d or \u201c<strong>cyclone<\/strong>.\u201d <strong>Typhoons<\/strong> are the <a href=\"https:\/\/ocean.si.edu\/planet-ocean\/waves-storms-tsunamis\/hurricanes-typhoons-and-cyclones\">same thing but in the northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From above, they look like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/OUgkvUbXZyZKLsNiEo74E6CCZZrHTs7DvEa3Q6hMmvYp6HaloPMhN46CxyrMGVmfcjub-4uDffc0LBt5pjqxrf1_L2c3Y8ugkfIwQwgbf5it67vnOtUkzgCbjWZXTBHujuvW9nkz\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Photo credit: NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And on the ground, typhoons are huge <strong>storms<\/strong> with <strong>heavy rain<\/strong> which often cause <strong>flooding<\/strong> and <strong>strong winds<\/strong> with enough force to <strong>knock down<\/strong> trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typhoons form when warm, moist air from the ocean rises and turns into clouds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do you learn about typhoons in school?&nbsp;<\/li><li>Do you know why typhoons form?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who like science and are interested in learning more about this process may enjoy the Daily News article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/app\/daily-news\/article\/how-do-hurricanes-form\/ktPi1pbTEeeYUEP28pGvtQ\">How Do Hurricanes Form?<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Typhoons in Our Students' Countries<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year around 30 typhoons form in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Around three <strong>hit<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nippon.com\/en\/features\/h00256\/\">Japan<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/typhoon.as.ntu.edu.tw\/wu_paper\/1999-wu-kuo.pdf\">Taiwan<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpri.kyoto-u.ac.jp\/nenpo\/no50\/ronbunB\/a50b0p02.pdf\">South Korea<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/54mgs6u1Bdp4cwspjSxHj5W6ADndHpsXrECuwXA-M7qdmtfD5PKB8wdfsXalgl4rcXqKXboLupMpgqqCz6hbOzH1-3fuzbYy9ja9aY2Rw78W_IV6C24pAo2ae2D9PUGXTt44HE6n\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The Tama River near Tokyo after a typhoon. Photo credit: \u30d1\u30f3\u30c0\u738b\u5b50<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, due to their force, typhoons can affect an area even if they don\u2019t directly <strong>pass through<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the countries many of our students call home, <strong>peak season<\/strong> for typhoons is August and September, and toward the end of the season, they tend to get stronger.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How many typhoons does your country <strong>experience<\/strong> each year?<\/li><li>When do most typhoons hit your country?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Weather patterns have been changing in recent years, though. Taiwan and the Philippines have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.koreaherald.com\/view.php?ud=20200219000725\">experienced fewer typhoons<\/a>, while South Korea, Japan, and China have seen an increase. In 2019, as many as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.koreaherald.com\/view.php?ud=20200219000725\">seven typhoons<\/a> hit the Korean peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Is your country experiencing more or less typhoons recently? Why do you think that is?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A fun fact about typhoons is that they have different names in different countries. Read <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/app\/daily-news\/article\/how-typhoons-and-hurricanes-are-named\/AvwlYu9TEemVgQs3eHPCtw\">this Daily News article<\/a> to see how they\u2019re named.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do you know how typhoons are named in your country?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are Typhoons Like?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Typhoons are a <strong>huge pain<\/strong> and bring nothing but trouble for farmers and people in certain regions. For example, in Japan, the southern islands get hit by more typhoons than the rest of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What parts of your country are the <strong>most affected<\/strong> by typhoons? Do you know why that is?<\/li><li>Is your region or neighborhood affected by typhoons?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, for the majority of people, most typhoons are not that scary. Indoors, where it\u2019s mostly safe, you\u2019ll just hear winds <strong>howling<\/strong> and rain <strong>pouring<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I heard that it\u2019s <strong>typhoon season<\/strong> recently in your country. Can you tell me what that\u2019s like?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In Taiwan, some people even look forward to typhoon season, as they might get <a href=\"https:\/\/en.rti.org.tw\/news\/view\/id\/2001653\">a day off from work or school<\/a>. When typhoons aren\u2019t as strong as expected, and it\u2019s safe to go out, people use the opportunity to <strong>flock to<\/strong> department stores, movie theatres, and karaoke bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do you get <strong>days off from work<\/strong> because of typhoons?<\/li><li>What do you normally do during a typhoon? How do you <strong>kill time<\/strong>?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But occasionally, typhoons do get very <strong>destructive<\/strong>. In recent years, Japan has experienced some big ones that caused problems, like widespread flooding and <a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Economy\/Natural-disasters\/Typhoon-blows-hole-in-Japan-s-aging-power-grid\">power outages<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Taiwan, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Typhoon_Nari_(2001)\">one of the strongest typhoons<\/a> in recent memory caused severe damage, including devastating <strong>landslides<\/strong> in mountainous areas.
