What does autumn mean for them? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below you\u2019ll find some questions you can ask to spark conversation as well as related words (in <strong>bold<\/strong>) and Daily News articles you can introduce should you choose to discuss this topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Autumn colors<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>In many parts of the world, trees burst into color in autumn. It has to do with the sky being high and horses being plump. Can you tell me what it means?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In Taiwan, leaves don\u2019t change color in places of lower elevation, so fall foliage isn't a big part of people\u2019s everyday lives. However, by the end of October, the <strong>rainy season<\/strong> ends and the <strong>dry season<\/strong> starts, bringing cooler weather and (usually) lots of tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Autumn foods\u00a0<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>We can\u2019t talk about a season without mentioning foods that are <strong>in season<\/strong>. Some people love them, while others love to hate them. For those who eat them, some like the soft, <strong>squishy<\/strong> kind, while others prefer them <strong>firm<\/strong> and <strong>crunchy<\/strong>. There are also those who like their persimmons dried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do you like persimmons? Why? Why not?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you like hard persimmons or soft persimmons? Can you tell me the difference? (It\u2019s more than just the texture!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where can you buy persimmons?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do you eat persimmons: by themselves, dried or in dessert?\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Another autumn fruit is the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pyrus_pyrifolia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Asian pear<\/strong><\/a>. Asian pears, also known as \u201capple pears,\u201d are larger and <strong>juicier<\/strong> than the kind found in Europe. Why? Why not?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In your country, is it common for people to give each other gifts of fruit?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s your favorite fruit or vegetable?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Another food that\u2019s in season in the autumn is the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pacific_saury\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Pacific saury<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong>also known as the <strong><em>mackerel pike<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em> In Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, this fish is often <strong>grilled<\/strong> so the skin is <strong>crispy<\/strong> but the insides remain juicy.
