In Taiwan, leaves don\u2019t change color in places of lower elevation, so fall foliage isn't a big part of people\u2019s everyday lives. In Japan, the city of Kyoto becomes very busy this time of year as tourists flock to see the city\u2019s historic monuments surrounded by vibrant<\/strong> colors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The red maple leaves<\/strong> you see in the foreground of the picture above are considered the most representative of autumn, so Japanese people refer to autumn\/fall foliage<\/strong> as \u201cred leaves\u201d or \u201cmaple leaves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n South Korea\u2019s historic sites also become more magnificent in the autumn, but the mountains are perhaps the best place to feast your eyes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A poetic phrase Koreans use when talking about this season is \u201cthe sky is high and the horses are plump<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d You can ask your students what this phrase means to them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n In Taiwan, leaves don\u2019t change color in places of lower elevation, so fall foliage isn't a big part of people\u2019s everyday lives. As a result, many people head to national parks on higher ground in order to enjoy the scenery<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n And in Thailand, autumn colors aren\u2019t a part of the landscape. However, by the end of October, the rainy season<\/strong> ends and the dry season<\/strong> starts, bringing cooler weather and (usually) lots of tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We can\u2019t talk about a season without mentioning foods that are in season<\/strong>. In East Asia, the persimmon<\/strong> is commonly associated with autumn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And lucky for us, persimmons are also a great conversation starter. Some people love them, while others love to hate them. For those who eat them, some like the soft, squishy<\/strong> kind, while others prefer them firm<\/strong> and crunchy<\/strong>. There are also those who like their persimmons dried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another autumn fruit is the Asian pear<\/strong><\/a>. Asian pears, also known as \u201capple pears,\u201d are larger and juicier<\/strong> than the kind found in Europe. They\u2019re usually served cut and peeled<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because of how difficult they are to grow, Asian pears are usually pricier than the average fruit and are sometimes given as gifts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Another food that\u2019s in season in the autumn is the Pacific saury<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>also known as the mackerel pike<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em> In Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, this fish is often grilled<\/strong> so the skin is crispy<\/strong> but the insides remain juicy.
