How can we make sure we\u2019re meeting their expectations for feedback and what does professional feedback look like?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer to that can be found below, alongside some examples of great feedback given to English learners preparing for speaking tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sample_1_Conversational_Feedback\"><\/span>Sample 1: Conversational Feedback<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-responsive\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"IELTS Speaking Part 2 | Band 8 Sample with Advice and Feedback\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hihIrNRfnpQ?start=685&feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This sample shows a teacher giving feedback in the form of a conversation. In other words, instead of simply jumping to the feedback, he starts by asking the student how she felt about her performance. This gives her a chance to voice her concerns and then helps him address them with specific feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the student is concerned about her vocabulary being too basic and the teacher then follows up by asking her why she felt that way. This prompts the student to think more deeply about what she could have done better and then makes her more receptive to his advice (i.e. how to vary her vocabulary).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When giving the advice, he stays conversational. For example, instead of directly telling her synonyms for \u201cgood,\u201d he asks her to come up with some: \u201c[In] \u2018good infrastructure,\u2019 what word could we use instead of \u2018good\u2019 for infrastructure\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some students prefer that we directly tell them the feedback, many enjoy this more interactive approach! Just keep in mind that this works better with regular students, who already feel more comfortable with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sample_2_Clear_Framework\"><\/span>Sample 2: Clear Framework<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-responsive\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u3010\u96c5\u601d\u53e3\u8aaa\u7bc4\u4f8b\u3011IELTS Speaking BAND 5.5\uff1a \u96c5\u601d\u53e3\u8aaa\u6280\u5de7\u8aaa\u660e+\u8a55\u5206\u6a19\u6e96 \u2502\u83c1\u82f1\u96c5\u601d\u8003\u8a66\u6e96\u5099\u4e2d\u5fc3\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hRWhLUSEX3s?start=895&feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll notice the feedback is very thorough which is not totally necessary in our case. And in fact, being this thorough can even be overwhelming for our students (unless they were preparing for a standardized test).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now onto a more applicable aspect of this feedback session: the teacher uses a clear framework, the IELTS scoring guidelines, which are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>fluency and coherence<\/li><li>lexical resource (vocabulary)<\/li><li>grammatical range and accuracy<\/li><li>pronunciation<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The full IELTS Speaking exam rubric can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/rubric\">here<\/a>. We don\u2019t have to use this exact framework. Other approaches to feedback are also very useful,such as the following:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/owlcation.com\/social-sciences\/What-is-Meant-by-Accuracy-in-Relation-to-Second-Language-Acquisition\">CAF<\/a>, which stands for \u201ccomplexity,\u201d \u201caccuracy,\u201d and \u201cfluency.\u201d<\/li><li>ACTFL\u2019s 10-level <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actfl.org\/publications\/guidelines-and-manuals\/actfl-proficiency-guidelines-2012\">Proficiency Guidelines<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/s\/toefl\/pdf\/toefl_speaking_rubrics.pdf\">TOEFL iBT Speaking rubric<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>An advantage of becoming familiar with the IELTS, TOEFL, or ACTFL rubrics is that many of our students take these tests (the ACTFL rubric is used for the OPIc test). However, learning a test rubric isn\u2019t absolutely necessary. In fact, many tutors have their own systems!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever the case, it helps to have a framework to guide your feedback and make sure you\u2019re being comprehensive. (For example, after learning the IELTS guidelines, I realized that I tend to give more feedback on vocabulary and pronunciation and less on grammar and fluency.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, different students want different kinds of feedback, so it\u2019s better to give feedback on many different aspects of their language use, let them have some choice over what weaknesses to focus on, and then hone in on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sample_3_Specific_Positive_Feedback\"><\/span>Sample 3: Specific, Positive Feedback<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-responsive\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"IELTS Speaking Mock Test with feedback - IELTS speaking trial test\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GWDAFdkUbdI?start=10&feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Out of the three samples, this one gives by far the most specific feedback. Along with each of the student\u2019s responses, a speech bubble appears, pointing out some mistakes, but also aptly-used specific words and phrases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a good reminder that feedback can also be positive. However, positive feedback needs to be specific as well. If it\u2019s too vague, it can come across as fake and also be ineffective.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/elt\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Cambridge-Press_Whitepaper_Feedback_Speaking_2018.pdf#page=8\">report by Cambridge University<\/a> explains that \u201cpraise is least effective when it is general (such as praise for having completed a task), because it does not provide any information which learners can use to further their learning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, if you praise a student about something in particular (e.g. \u201cgreat pronunciation of the \u2018r\u2019 sound!\u201d), they\u2019ll know to keep doing that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tutor Royaltyunen (\ud83c\udde7\ud83c\uddef) shares one way to provide this sort of specific feedback: \u201cSometimes when I hear a student use an expression well, I start clapping, and say, \u2018I like that expression\u2019 or \u2018I\u2019ve never seen a student use that expression\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%F0%9F%93%8C_Takeaways\"><\/span>\ud83d\udccc Takeaways<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>To sum up, here are some ways to deliver professional feedback:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Keep it conversational: Ask the student what they thought before telling them the answer.<\/li><li>Use a framework: This way you won\u2019t miss anything.<\/li><li>Be specific with positive feedback: Don\u2019t just say \u201cgood job\u201d say \u201cgood job with X.\u201d<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>However, remember that every student is different. Some students want extensive feedback, while others don\u2019t care about it and don\u2019t read post-lesson notes at all. As Tutor Asja (\ud83c\udde7\ud83c\udde6) suggests, \u201cInstead of guessing based on the student\u2019s level, reasons for studying, or personality, I usually just ask them what kind of feedback they want.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So always remember to ask. Then if the student says they want feedback, try to use the advice in this piece to help craft a good one.
