And since people get through the winter in different ways from place to place, why not take advantage of it in a free-talk lesson?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on to discover some questions we can ask our students to spark conversation along with plenty of vocabulary (bolded) they\u2019ll want to know!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hot_Pot_%F0%9F%8D%B2\"><\/span>Hot Pot \ud83c\udf72<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>At this time of year, our students in Taiwan and Japan start eating more of something called \u201c<strong>hot pot<\/strong>.\u201d You can get an idea of it from this video:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-responsive\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hot Pot: A Beginner\u2019s Guide\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ePiBCNmeP9M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In sum, people sit around a pot of boiling water or <strong>broth<\/strong>. Then, they <strong>dunk<\/strong> meat, vegetables, tofu and\/or seafood into the broth and take them out when they\u2019re ready to be eaten.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do you like hot pot?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is hot pot popular all year long or just this time of the year?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s your favorite hot pot ingredient? What\u2019s your least favorite?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What kind of ingredients do people in your country generally put in hot pot?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What kind of broth do you use?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The meat that\u2019s put into the pot is cut thinly so it can be cooked quickly. A form of hot pot that is popular around East Asia is \u201c<strong>shabu shabu<\/strong>,\u201d in which the slices of meat are thin enough to be cooked in just a few seconds!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What\u2019s your favorite kind of hot pot?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have you tried shabu shabu? What do you think of it? <em>(Note: the term \u201cshabu shabu\u201d is originally Japanese, but now also popularly used in Korea and Taiwan.)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>For Japanese students: <\/em>Why is shabu shabu called \u201cshabu shabu\u201d?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But let\u2019s not forget about the <strong>dipping sauce<\/strong>, another important feature of the hot pot experience. Popular options include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justonecookbook.com\/how-to-make-sesame-sauce-goma-dare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sesame sauce<\/a> for Japanese hot pots and soy sauce with <strong>condiments<\/strong> like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shacha_sauce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shacha sauce<\/a> for Taiwanese hot pots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, after all the meat and veggies are gone, people usually put in noodles or rice to finish up. These ingredients <strong>soak up<\/strong> the stew, absorbing the <strong>rich flavor<\/strong> of all the ingredients that came before it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What do you do with all the soup when you\u2019re done?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"DIY_or_Restaurant\"><\/span>DIY or Restaurant?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can have hot pot at home, <strong>DIY<\/strong>-style, or eat at a restaurant that just serves hot pot. Different hot pot restaurants offer different perks. Some are <strong>all-you-can-eat<\/strong> while others offer high-quality meat or nice dessert options. Yes, even in the dead of summer. For example, the country\u2019s famous <a href=\"https:\/\/mykoreankitchen.com\/samgyetang-korean-ginseng-chicken-soup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ginseng chicken soup<\/a> is considered a <a href=\"https:\/\/tutor.engoo.com\/blog\/2020\/07\/30\/summer-heat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">summer food<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So unlike in Japan and Taiwan, hot pot isn\u2019t really its own category of food here. However, you can be sure that hot food definitely gets more popular this time of year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A famous type of \u201cfood-in-a-pot\u201d in Korea is <a href=\"https:\/\/mykoreankitchen.com\/army-stew-budae-jjigae\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>army stew<\/strong><\/a>, which uses kimchi, spam and instant noodles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another example is <a href=\"https:\/\/futuredish.com\/dak-hanmari-koreas-one-chicken-soup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>one-chicken soup<\/strong><\/a>, a delicious soup that includes chicken which you can dip in a flavorful soy sauce-mustard sauce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What\u2019s your favorite hot food?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tell me about army stew! Why is it called that?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s your favorite chicken stew? Do you like one-chicken soup better or ginseng chicken soup?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koreanbapsang.com\/seolleongtang-beef-bone-soup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ox bone soup<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/mykoreankitchen.com\/gamjatang-pork-bone-soup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pork bone soup<\/a>? (The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasteatlas.com\/most-popular-soups-in-korea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">list goes on<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Another popular hot dish in Korea is <strong>rice porridge<\/strong>, or <strong>congee<\/strong>. It\u2019s like risotto, but the rice is cooked to a <strong>mush<\/strong>.
