While there are <a href=\"https:\/\/japantoday.com\/category\/features\/lifestyle\/the-dreaded-party-season-some-embarrassing-office-party-mistakes\">crazy<\/a> <strong>end-of-year parties<\/strong>,<strong> <\/strong>also known as <strong>year-end parties<\/strong>, leading up to the big day, New Year for most people involves going back to their hometowns, where they relax with their family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How do you plan to spend your New Year holiday? What are some things you usually do on New Year\u2019s?<\/li><li>Would you rather spend time with family or travel during your New Year holiday?<\/li><li>How long is your New Year\u2019s break?<\/li><li>Does your company host end-of-year parties? What do you think about them?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Typical activities include drinking <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Z%C5%8Dni\">soup with mochi in it<\/a>, watching an annual music competition, visiting a shrine or temple, and eating <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/app\/daily-news\/article\/osechi-ryori-japans-traditional-new-years-food\/xIQyPuyOEee9fxPOZAfN5g\"><strong>delicacies<\/strong> in a box<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/jmM0NdxQ9mFIEeic2mvs1SwOw0RTG_Gqcru1PEKdGrH633sLKvYYksA1-9AKO_C1kKsHLSV--nbllv89j4BZUXj0gSjnE5yjdKDCGY1erTgnji269yhfC2M2cUeEgkkUOQKANL8k\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Crowds lining up to pray at a temple.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What are some special foods you eat for New Year\u2019s?<\/li><li>What are some special TV programs people watch on New Year\u2019s Eve?<\/li><li>I hear some people like to <strong>catch a sunrise<\/strong> on January 1st. Why do you think this is? And have you tried this before?<\/li><li>Do you stay up until midnight on New Year\u2019s Eve? If so, what do you do?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the rather subdued celebrations, New Year is actually one of the most important holidays in Japan, and there is a lot of prep work compared with other holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"End-of-Year_Cleaning\"><\/span>End-of-Year Cleaning<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For one, it\u2019s time for some <strong>end-of-year cleaning<\/strong>. This is a chance to not only give your home a thorough <strong>scrub-down<\/strong> but also to <strong>de-clutter<\/strong> it (i.e. throw away all the junk you don\u2019t actually need!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What does your end-of-year cleaning involve?<\/li><li>How much time do you spend on end-of-year cleaning?<\/li><li>Are there any other times of the year that you do <strong>deep cleaning?<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>End-of-year cleaning isn\u2019t just done in private homes, but also in workplaces, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nippon.com\/en\/jip\/p00110\/\">religious establishments<\/a>, and schools, where students <a href=\"https:\/\/resources.realestate.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Osouji-Children-1024x768.jpg\">as young as kindergarteners<\/a> make their classrooms <strong>sparkling clean<\/strong>!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do you clean your own school or office as well at the end of the year?<\/li><li>Does your company hire <strong>janitors?<\/strong> Or do the employees do all the cleaning?<\/li><li>Do people also clean up their neighborhoods?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditionally, the point of this custom was to clean away anything bad from the previous year so you could welcome the new one with a clean home and a refreshed mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Where do you think the tradition of cleaning your home at the end of the year came from?<\/li><li>Does your family have any end-of-year cleaning traditions?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/life\/2015\/12\/26\/lifestyle\/osoji-ways-keep-home-spick-span\/#jtarticle:~:text=According%20to%20a%20survey%20taken%20by,the%20year%20is%20on%20the%20decrease.\">a recent survey,<\/a> fewer people perform end-of-year cleaning these days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Why do you think fewer people do end-of-year cleaning?<\/li><li>If you regularly clean a space, would you still do end-of-year cleaning?<\/li><li>If you couldn\u2019t do end-of-year cleaning, would you hire help?<\/li><li>Do you like cleaning and doing <strong>household chores<\/strong>? (Some hate it. Others find it <strong>therapeutic<\/strong>.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Decorations\"><\/span>Decorations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to making sure their homes are <strong>spotless<\/strong>, many households and shops also <strong>put up<\/strong> <strong>bamboo<\/strong> and <strong>pine<\/strong> decorations in front of their homes. These are traditionally placed there to welcome New Year\u2019s deities who bring <strong>good fortune<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/qREacmkt6-1l0K56h3bCy2yUJR96yqZ_QcdYKOvbWZiqE2I5_KFJfHFLp6cCKtqa2ZxPmimhAZnwDOAfCCcwpRCaTXEde5Gipo719966Esc0siaXZ5jGs2IgLA5_ooMQOc2ZDPUh\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What kind of decorations do you put up for New Year?&nbsp;<\/li><li>I heard that bamboo and pine decorations are put up for New Year. What do these plants represent?<\/li><li>Do towns and cities also get decorated for New Year?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people also put out little <strong>ornaments<\/strong> representing <strong>zodiac animals.<\/strong> For example, if it\u2019s the year of the cow, you\u2019ll see some miniature cows at houses and stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What\u2019s your <strong>zodiac animal<\/strong>?<\/li><li>What do the animals represent?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"New_Year_Cards\"><\/span>New Year Cards<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Japan, the New Year is also synonymous with <strong>greeting cards<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/yTl5eB845Q_B4oa0A_sesvSUENw4Iv2QaBQXgdZOO5neoeVp2wE_WIJ4STtVsxo2x2z0uRrg11jF91idBMqeBJtPcgOkGqXEsEZo1YTl0PK6S68buZOKQMhJlAlbxL3b9Icqyz-q\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This tradition apparently comes from the custom of <strong>calling on <\/strong>your friends and family on New Year\u2019s Day. Since it wasn\u2019t possible to deliver in-person greetings to all the important people in your life, people started sending out cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do people just send cards or do they send presents as well?<\/li><li>I hear that kids get gifts of money on New Year\u2019s Day. Is that true?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Thought to have started over a thousand years ago, this tradition remains strong to this day. For example, on the first day of 2020 alone, <a href=\"https:\/\/japantoday.com\/category\/national\/japan-post-delivers-about-1.28-billion-nengajo\">over one billion New Year\u2019s cards<\/a> were delivered.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Where do you think this custom of sending New Year\u2019s cards came from?<\/li><li>Do you send New Year cards? Did you make them yourself?&nbsp;<\/li><li>Why do you think this tradition\/custom is so popular?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These greeting cards take many forms, with the most typical being <strong>postcards<\/strong>. People also <strong>customize<\/strong> their cards with photos of themselves or their family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What are some typical designs you find on New Year cards? <em>(For example, a lot feature pictures of the coming year\u2019s zodiac animal.)<\/em><\/li><li>What are some pros and cons of sending physical New Year cards vs <strong>e-cards<\/strong>?<\/li><li>I hear the New Year cards come with a <strong>lottery<\/strong>. Can you tell me about this?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In preparation for this event, the postal service sets up a separate New Year card delivery service, which ensures that your cards will be delivered exactly on January 1st!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Can you tell me about this special service Japan Post sets up specifically for New Year cards? How are cards delivered exactly on New Year\u2019s Day?<\/li><li>Is it bad if a New Year\u2019s card arrives before or after January 1st? If so, why? (In the US, for example, it\u2019s OK if a Christmas card comes before Christmas.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a lot more we could share about New Year in Japan, but we\u2019ll let your students take it from here!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"New_Year_in_South_Korea_Taiwan_and_Thailand\"><\/span>New Year in South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, in South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand, there aren\u2019t many traditions associated with January 1st. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What are some differences between these two New Years? (e.g. Who do you spend Lunar New Year with? Who do you celebrate January 1st with?)<\/li><li>What are some things people do on New Year\u2019s? (People do send New Year cards and catch sunrises in these countries too.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, January 1st is still a day off in South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand, and there are plenty of <strong>firework displays<\/strong>, <strong>concerts<\/strong>, and <strong>countdown events <\/strong>for those who want to get festive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What are your plans for New Year\u2019s\u2019 Eve?<\/li><li>Would you rather attend a countdown event in-person or watch it <strong>live-streamed<\/strong> at home?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, you can find many New Year events in South Korea <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mykoreatrip.com\/2020-new-years-eve-celebration-in-south-korea\/\">here<\/a>.
