As usual, we\u2019ll also provide you with questions you can ask to spark discussion as well as relevant vocabulary (bolded) your students might find interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tomb-Sweeping_Day_in_Taiwan\"><\/span>Tomb-Sweeping Day in Taiwan<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tomb-Sweeping Day is a national holiday that falls on April 4th every year. What do you do at the tomb?<\/li><li>When people talk about \u2018tomb-sweeping,\u2019 whose tombs are they referring to? Do you actually visit the tombs of all your ancestors?&nbsp;<\/li><li>What\u2019s your favorite part of tomb-sweeping? What\u2019s your least favorite part?<\/li><li>How is COVID affecting your families\u2019 plans for tomb-sweeping day this year?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to tidying up gravesites, families also make sure to <strong>provide for<\/strong> their ancestors. Does someone from your family prepare them or are they purchased?&nbsp;<\/li><li>What happens to the offerings after the tomb-sweeping <strong>rituals<\/strong>? Do people eat them?<\/li><li>Does the paper money have to be in any specific currency?<\/li><li>Besides food and money, are there any other things you can offer to the ancestors?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, <strong>gravesites<\/strong> are not the only places where people lay their ancestors to rest. For a variety of reasons, more families choose to keep the <strong>ashes<\/strong> of the deceased in <strong>columbariums<\/strong>. Many of these are <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1374487\/taipeis-dragon-tower-provides-alternative-form-of-burial\/\">privately run<\/a>, though there are public ones as well that are much more affordable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/03\/16025509\/columbarium-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1690\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/03\/16025509\/columbarium-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/03\/16025509\/columbarium-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/03\/16025509\/columbarium-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>A columbarium in central Taiwan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>here are also many who choose more <strong>eco-friendly<\/strong> options. The most popular type is the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/articles\/taipei-tree-burial-public-park\">tree burial<\/a>,\u201d where the ashes of the deceased are buried in a mound where a tree is planted. As a plus, tree burials are free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What do you think are the pros and cons of each type of burial? Why do you think more and more people choose to have their ashes kept in columbariums or buried with trees?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a lot more interesting aspects of this topic your student can share with you, so we\u2019ll let them take it from here!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_New_Year_in_Thailand\"><\/span>The New Year in Thailand<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Thailand, each new year starts with a <strong>splash<\/strong>! The traditional Thai New Year is officially April 13th to 15th and is perhaps best known for being the biggest <strong>water fight<\/strong> in the world. You can get a feel for the festive atmosphere in the following video:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-responsive\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What is SONGKRAN? From Ancient Origins to World&#039;s Biggest Waterfight!\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/shDGpOyQB_A?start=276&feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few reasons people splash each other in water. For one, this custom is believed to <strong>wash away<\/strong> any bad luck that may be lingering from the year before. Plus, the New Year is the hottest time of year, so the water helps people <strong>cool off<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Can you walk into the streets during the New Year without getting <strong>soaked<\/strong>? Are there any rules about who gets splashed with water or is everyone <strong>fair game<\/strong>?<\/li><li>Can you tell me why people splash water at each other during the New Year? Does the water <strong>symbolize<\/strong> anything?<\/li><li>Is the water <strong>purified<\/strong> in any special way?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to <strong>purifying<\/strong> themselves with water, people also do <strong>spring cleaning<\/strong> and wear new clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I hear that the Thai New Year is coming up. Will you be cleaning your home in preparation?&nbsp;<\/li><li>Do you buy new clothes for the New Year? Will you wear traditional clothing during the New Year?<\/li><li>Have the \u201cat-home\u201d aspects of the holiday become more important in light of the pandemic?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The holiday has some religious origins, which are still noticeable today. Can you explain the reasons for this tradition? And is there special food prepared for the monks?<\/li><li>Can you tell me about why Buddha statues are also splashed with water?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At its heart though, the Thai New Year is an occasion for Thais from all over the country to <strong>reunite <\/strong>with their families. Each family has different ways of observing this festival, as does each part of the country, so make sure to ask your student about these traditions too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What kinds of New Year traditions does your family have?<\/li><li>Can you tell me about how people in different parts of Thailand celebrate the traditional New Year?&nbsp;<\/li><li>What kinds of events are held in your town or city?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Easter_in_South_Korea\"><\/span>Easter in South Korea<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Easter is on a different day each year, and this time it falls on Sunday, April 4th (aka today!).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it\u2019s not a public holiday in South Korea, Christians make up <a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2016\/04\/christianity-and-korea\/\">nearly a third<\/a> of the population, so politicians make sure to <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/s7kJWVTFRVs?t=69\">show up at Easter mass<\/a> to leave an impression on voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So you might hear some Korean students mention it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How popular is Easter in your country?
