But even they appreciate tips on how to improve. So whether we\u2019re giving on-the-spot corrections or end-of-lesson feedback, let\u2019s make sure to leave a good impression!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This time, we\u2019ll look at how to make our feedback more professional with the IELTS Speaking criteria. You\u2019ll not only become more familiar with an exam that many students take, but also learn a way to structure your feedback so it\u2019s more targeted and helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"IELTS_Speaking_101\"><\/span>IELTS Speaking 101<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/tutor.engoo.com\/blog\/2019\/09\/16\/introducing-the-new-ielts-materials-behind-the-scenes-interview-included\/\">IELTS Speaking test<\/a> assesses candidates on the following four criteria:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fluency and coherence<\/li><li>Lexical resource (which we\u2019ll break up into \u201cvocabulary\u201d and \u201cparaphrase\u201d)<\/li><li>Grammatical accuracy and range (which we\u2019ll simply call \u201cgrammar\u201d)<\/li><li>Pronunciation<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of these criteria is graded on a scale of 1 to 9, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ielts.org\/-\/media\/pdfs\/speaking-band-descriptors.ashx?la=en\">descriptions<\/a> of what each score entails can give us plenty of ideas for our own feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this post, we\u2019ll go over three of these criteria \u2014 vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar \u2014 particularly as they apply to intermediates (i.e. the majority of our students).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vocabulary\"><\/span>Vocabulary<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>We all know to point out incorrect word choice. But aside from that, how can we gauge a student\u2019s vocabulary level?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two useful criteria IELTS uses are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Does the speaker have enough vocabulary to \u201ctalk about familiar and unfamiliar topics\u201d?<\/li><li>Does the speaker have enough vocabulary to \u201cdiscuss topics at length\u201d?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say you\u2019re having a free conversation lesson with a student who is a doctor. You can see if they can discuss their job \u201cat length\u201d by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>asking in-depth questions about their work (<a href=\"https:\/\/tutor.engoo.com\/blog\/2020\/03\/16\/creepy-online-tutor\/\">without prying<\/a>, of course!)&nbsp;<\/li><li>asking about more abstract sides of the job (e.g. \u201cWhat do you think is the most important quality for a doctor to have?\u201d \u201cWhat are your thoughts on alternative forms of medicine?\u201d)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To see if they can talk about unfamiliar topics, ask them about things unrelated to the medical field and then <a href=\"https:\/\/tutor.engoo.com\/blog\/2020\/11\/15\/professional-feedback\/\">discuss how they did<\/a> at the end of the lesson. To give you a sense of what vocabulary-related feedback you can give, here are the criteria from the IELTS framework:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"623\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/05\/06102809\/image6.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/05\/06102809\/image6.png 623w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/05\/06102809\/image6-300x144.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, you might tell the student, \u201cYou clearly have enough vocabulary to \u201ctalk about familiar topics like your job, but will need to expand it in order to be able to talk about unfamiliar topics, too\u201d or \u201cYou need to learn more vocabulary to be able to talk about your job in detail.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pronunciation\"><\/span>Pronunciation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>It should come as no surprise that pronunciation is assessed on a speaking test. However, pronunciation here doesn\u2019t mean accent. Test-takers don\u2019t get higher scores for speaking with an American or British accent. <a href=\"https:\/\/tutor.engoo.com\/blog\/2021\/01\/24\/accents\/\">Other accents<\/a> are equally acceptable as long as they don\u2019t affect intelligibility \u2014 the main thing IELTS looks for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, notice that a score of \u201cBand 2\u201d indicates that someone is \u201coften unintelligible,\u201d a Band 9 indicates that someone is \u201ceffortless to understand,\u201d and the bands in between represent different levels of intelligibility:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"312\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/05\/06102805\/image3-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1799\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/05\/06102805\/image3-1.png 624w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/05\/06102805\/image3-1-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Aspects of pronunciation that are important to intelligibility include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>proper production of the basic sounds of English (especially <a href=\"https:\/\/tutor.engoo.com\/blog\/2019\/09\/12\/are-you-correcting-these-pronunciation-mistakes-part-i-vowels-consonants\/\">these vowels and consonants<\/a>)<\/li><li>division of sentences into <a href=\"https:\/\/tutor.engoo.com\/blog\/2019\/10\/07\/are-you-correcting-these-pronunciation-mistakes-%f0%9f%97%a3%ef%b8%8f-part-ii-chunking\/\">meaningful groups of words<\/a> (and knowing where to <a href=\"https:\/\/tutor.engoo.com\/blog\/2019\/10\/28\/are-you-correcting-these-pronunciation-mistakes-%F0%9F%97%A3%ef%b8%8f-part-iii-nuclear-stress\/\">place stress<\/a> within those groups)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/tutor.engoo.com\/blog\/2021\/04\/18\/robotic-sounding-student-teach-them-some-rhythm\/\">rhythm<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So when you give pronunciation-related feedback to a student at the end of the lesson, you can first mention how intelligible they were (e.g. \u201cYour English is easy to understand\u201d) and then specify what they could do better (e.g. \u201cyou\u2019ll want to work on dividing your speech into word groups to make yourself easier to follow\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Grammar\"><\/span>Grammar<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Grammar is important to doing well on any standardized test, and IELTS is no exception. However, you\u2019ll notice that similar to pronunciation, it\u2019s most important to focus on grammatical mistakes that cause comprehension problems. You can see that \u201ccomprehension problems\u201d are mentioned in descriptions in Bands 4 to 6:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"623\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/05\/06102814\/image7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1801\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/05\/06102814\/image7.png 623w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/05\/06102814\/image7-300x144.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples of grammar mistakes that could cause comprehension problems depending on the context:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Confusion of <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/app\/lessons\/grammar-grammar-im-amazed-thats-amazing\/_wo3dGAkEee6fXv23nGRUg?category_id=6r1fXsYHEeimuzOlcF_9gA&amp;course_id=1llXaMYPEeiWI9-YoYwf4A\">-ed and -ing<\/a> (e.g. when a student says \u201cI\u2019m amazing\u201d instead of \u201cI\u2019m amazed\u201d)<\/li><li>Confusion of adverbs and adjectives (e.g. when a student says \u201cI worked hardly for the test\u201d instead of \u201cI worked hard for the test.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll also want to take note of errors the student consistently makes. For example, if they say things like, \u201cI went school\u201d or \u201cI go mall with my friends,\u201d we\u2019ll definitely want to point out that they\u2019re leaving out the preposition \u201cto.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, keep in mind that grammar has less of an impact on communication than most teachers realize. As a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/elt\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Cambridge-Press_Whitepaper_Feedback_Speaking_2018.pdf#page=8\">report by Cambridge University<\/a> explains, \u201cCommunication problems ... are more likely to be caused by vocabulary and pronunciation issues ... so there may be a strong case for focusing on these more than on grammar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, if your student is preparing for a standardized test, be strict with grammar. By higher levels, they should be able to produce \u201ca majority of error-free sentences.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if their goal is communication, focus more on vocabulary and pronunciation and introduce grammar when it helps students form more complex sentences. For example, if a student says \u201cI think our company should hire more writers.
