{"id":1833,"date":"2021-06-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-13T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tutor.engoo.com\/blog\/?p=1833"},"modified":"2021-05-14T06:17:49","modified_gmt":"2021-05-14T06:17:49","slug":"dragon-boat-festival-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tutor.engoo.com\/blog\/teaching-conversation\/dragon-boat-festival-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Upcoming Holiday: Dragon Boat Festival in Taiwan \ud83d\udc09"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dragon Boat Festival is one of the biggest traditional holidays in Taiwan (besides <a href=\"https:\/\/tutor.engoo.com\/blog\/2021\/02\/08\/upcoming-holiday-lunar-new-year-%f0%9f%8e%89\/\">Lunar New Year<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/tutor.engoo.com\/blog\/2020\/09\/28\/mid-autumn-festival-korean-thanksgiving\/\">Mid-Autumn Festival<\/a>) and this year, it\u2019s being celebrated on Monday, June 14th.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides getting a day off, what else does this holiday mean for our students? Below you\u2019ll find some questions you can ask to spark discussion as well as relevant words and phrases (bolded) you can teach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s a Dragon Boat?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dragon boats are long, <strong>narrow<\/strong> boats with a dragon\u2019s head in the front and a dragon\u2019s tail in the back. Racing in these boats is an <strong>ancient<\/strong> sport that originated in what is now southern China thousands of years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Are there any dragon boat races in your city? Have you ever gone to see a race? Why? You can get an idea of it in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=inM2gsHamwI\">this news report on the Taipei International Dragon Boat Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do get on the topic of dragon boats, you might want to ask students about dragons in general and the <strong>symbolism<\/strong> behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Can you tell me why the boats are shaped like dragons instead of, say, sharks, dolphins or whales?<\/li><li>What are dragons <strong>associated with<\/strong> in your culture?<\/li><li>I hear that a lot of parents want their kids to be born in the year of the dragon. Is that true?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Real Star of the Show<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Taiwan, the main star of the festival is something much humbler: sticky rice dumplings <strong>wrapped<\/strong> in bamboo or banana leaves. Commonly known as either <em>zong-zi<\/em> or <em>bah-tsang<\/em>, they're actually available year-round in much of the Chinese-speaking world. Why? Why not?<\/li><li>Do you make bah-tsang<em> <\/em>yourself? Or do you buy it?&nbsp;<\/li><li>Can you tell me how bah-tsang differ in different parts of Taiwan?<\/li><li>I hear people sometimes get an <strong>upset stomach<\/strong> from eating too much bah-tsang. Can you tell me why this is?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But how did bah-tsang become the highlight of the festival? This is something you\u2019ll want to ask your students, but we\u2019ll give you a sneak-peak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Legend<\/strong> has it that a patriotic poet <strong>threw himself into<\/strong> a river on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. And, as one version of the story goes, people threw balls of rice (the predecessor to bah-tsang) into the water so that fish would eat them instead of his body.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In reality, the origins of the festival predate the poet\u2019s time. But as one scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/arts-culture\/the-legends-behind-the-dragon-boat-festival-135634582\/\">puts it<\/a>, \u201cUsually Chinese festivals are explained by the traumatic death of some great paragon of virtue,\u201d so this story stuck and you can be sure your students will tell you some version of it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Can you tell me how the Dragon Boat Festival started?&nbsp;<\/li><li>How did bah-tsang become such an important part of the Dragon Boat Festival?<\/li><li>What are some other popular <strong>folktales<\/strong> in your culture?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see how a bah-tsang is made from scratch in this video:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-responsive\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to Make Zongzi \u7cbd\u5b50 (Bamboo Sticky Rice Dumpling) | Dragon Boat Festival\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DmO5Ezy43ao?start=60&feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Customs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another Dragon Boat Festival <strong>custom<\/strong> is \u201cegg balancing.\u201d Many people believe that eggs can stand up straight on this day of the year, so ask your students whether they\u2019ve tried to do this!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/05\/14055948\/image13.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1836\" width=\"1000\" height=\"624\"\/><figcaption>\u00a9 Darryl E.
