Here are eight to get you started. As always, we've included explanations as well as example sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Come_down_with\"><\/span>Come down with ~<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Come down with\" is a <span class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">common way to say<\/span> that you're starting to show symptoms of an illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I've been sneezing all day. I might be <strong>coming down with<\/strong> something.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I'm afraid I've <strong>come down with<\/strong> a bad cold, so I'll need to take the day off.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Students sometimes ask why the phrase is \"come down with.\" It might help to explain that <em>coming<\/em> down with an illness is like being \"over<em>come<\/em>\" by it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Run-down\"><\/span>Run-down<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another expression that uses the word \"down\" is \"run-down,\" meaning \"tired or exhausted.\" This tiredness often comes from overwork, but it can also be due to sickness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>My fever has gone away, but I still feel <strong>run-down<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>You look a little <strong>run-down<\/strong>. Maybe you should go home and rest.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Nasty\"><\/span><mdspan datatext=\"el1642752677326\" class=\"mdspan-comment\">Nasty<\/mdspan><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students probably know \"nasty\" in the sense of \"not nice.\" They'll find it interesting that the word can also be used to describe colds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I had a <strong>nasty<\/strong> cold last month, so I had to miss a few days of work.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I'm not sure if I have the flu or just a <strong>nasty <\/strong>cold.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Just point out that the word here means more than just \"not nice.\" It's the same \"nasty\" that we use to describe things that cause a lot of damage,&nbsp;like a nasty storm that brings floods and power outages or a nasty injury that's difficult to recover from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Under_the_weather\"><\/span><strong>Under the weather<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This general term for feeling sick is often used to talk about colds and the flu. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may be useful to mention that while not exactly formal, it sounds slightly more professional than some of the others entries on this list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I've been<strong> under the weather<\/strong> for the past few days.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>If you're feeling<strong> under the weather<\/strong>, it's best to stay home in case you're contagious.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_sniffles\"><\/span>The sniffles<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\"The sniffles\" is a cute way to refer to a mild cold that causes someone to sniffle a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I've got <strong>the sniffles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>My dog's got a bad case of <strong>the sniffles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_chills\"><\/span>The chills<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As the name suggests, \"the chills\" make us feel cold and shake repeatedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I had <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>chills<\/strong> and couldn't sleep <a href=\"https:\/\/tutor.engoo.com\/blog\/teaching-grammar\/strengthening-questions-and-negative-statements-with-at-all\/\">at all<\/a> last night.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I've got a fever and <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>chills<\/strong>. I should stay in bed today.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It's possible that your student will confuse this with the common slang \"chill \/ chill out,\" so be ready to explain that one refers to the body while the other refers to behavior and attitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_flu\"><\/span>The flu<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Learners often wonder if it's \u201cthe flu\u201d or just \"flu.\" Across most English-speaking countries, \"the flu\" is standard. Be sure to point out that \"a flu\" \u2014 a common mistake among students \u2014 is inaccurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>My coworker is out with&nbsp;<strong>the flu<\/strong>, so I\u2019ll need to cover for him.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It usually takes a week for people to recover from&nbsp;<strong>the flu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Have_vs_Catch\"><\/span>Have vs. Catch<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When to use \"catch\" and when to use \"have\" is often the source of a lot of student confusion. You can explain that an illness is like a ball; after you <em>catch<\/em> a ball, you <em>have<\/em> it in your hands. In the same way, after you <em>catch <\/em>an illness, you <em>have <\/em>it in your body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, \"catch\" refers to a one-time event, while \"have\" refers to the entire period of time someone is sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Tom <strong>caught<\/strong> a cold last week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>[= Tom caught a cold.
