Yet, when we speak a foreign language, our ideas get watered down by simplistic language (\ud83d\ude29). How can we help learners overcome this problem? Cue ... smart expressions!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help you out, we've gathered smart expressions below that\u2019ll allow your students to cleverly handle three key parts of discussions: providing reasons, making predictions and giving recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Expressions_for_Explaining_Why\"><\/span>Expressions for Explaining Why<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some discussion and test questions ask students to provide possible reasons for something. For example, \u201cHow would you explain the rise of hate speech on the internet?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Encourage intermediate students to go beyond, \u201cI think this is because ...\u201d and instead try the following expressions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The rise of hate speech ...<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Intermediate<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Advanced<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><em>might be because ...<\/em><\/td><td><em>might stem from ...<\/em><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><em>can be explained by ...<\/em><\/td><td><em>could be attributed to ...<\/em><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><em>was probably caused by ...<\/em><\/td><td><em>may be due to ...<\/em><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><em>may be a result of ...<\/em><\/td><td><em>*A possible explanation might be that ...<\/em><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice the modal expressions \u2013 \u201cmight,\u201d \"may\" and \u201cprobably\u201d \u2013 in the examples above. These allow students to avoid expressing absolute certainty when they\u2019re not 100% sure of their response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since \u201cHow would you explain\u201d-type questions require students to provide what they think is a possible reason, students will feel more comfortable sharing their opinions when they're taught these modal expressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, advanced students want to express correlation instead of causation, but lack the expressions to do that. If you sense hesitation or hear them say something like, \u201cThis is kind of because \u2026\u201d or \u201cMaybe this is because \u2026,\u201d you can suggest the following expressions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rises in hate speech are <em>often associated with \u2026<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rises in hate speech are <em>often related to \u2026<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If a student wants to provide more than one reason, encourage them to start with, \"<em>There are several possible reasons\/explanations for<\/em> the rise in hate crime.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Expressions_for_Making_Predictions\"><\/span>Expressions for Making Predictions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some discussion questions ask students to make predictions, such as \u201cHow might greater diversity benefit the tech industry as a whole?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your student starts with \u201cI think\u201d or \u201cI guess,\u201d you might want to suggest the following alternatives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>My guess is that ...<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>I'm not convinced that ...<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>The data suggest that ...<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>History shows that ...<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Given that \/ Seeing as ... I'm not convinced that ...<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The last pair of alternatives include conditional phrases like \u201cgiven that\u201d and \u201cseeing as,\u201d which allow for more nuance in responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Expressions_for_Providing_Recommendations\"><\/span>Expressions for Providing Recommendations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A different category of questions might ask students to give recommendations, such as \u201cWhat could governments do to encourage people to buy environmentally friendly cars?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Encourage your students to go beyond \u201cI think the government should \u2026\u201d and try the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>They should consider ...<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>They should focus on ...<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>One solution\/option would be to ...<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>It would help to ...<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>It would make sense to ...<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>A reasonable\/sensible approach would be to ...<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>One way forward is to ...<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>A key priority would be to ...<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>It would be in their interest to ...<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who have multiple suggestions can structure their responses like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The government has <em>a few options.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>One option would be to<\/em> ... <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Another option would be to<\/em> ... <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>A third option would be to ...<\/em> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%F0%9F%91%8B_Thats_it_for_now\"><\/span>\ud83d\udc4b That\u2019s it for now!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What did you think of these expressions?
