However, some students aren\u2019t happy with the change and keep trying to find ways to get us to use Skype, wasting valuable lesson time.<\/p>\n<p>How can we get such students on-board with the recent update?<\/p>\n<h1><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_1_Use_the_AudioVideo_Check\"><\/span>Step 1. Use the Audio\/Video Check<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>Some students ask tutors to switch to Skype via the special request section or during the lesson. They are not supposed to do this, and there is no need for us to comply. After all, Skype should only be used if there are issues that cannot be resolved with basic troubleshooting. So the first thing we want to do is to establish that everything is OK.<\/p>\n<p>When your student enters the lesson room, check whether the audio and video are clear, as you usually would. You may also want to send the student a message in the chatbox to make sure that it works as well.<\/p>\n<p>As one tutor (\ud83c\uddf5\ud83c\udded) explains, \u201cYour student will probably say that everything is fine, in which case, they can\u2019t use technical issues as an excuse to switch to Skype.\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/09\/06044008\/image31.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"432\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/09\/06044008\/image31.png 624w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/09\/06044008\/image31-300x208.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of course, there\u2019s still a chance that we\u2019ll have to use Skype if technical issues arise in the middle of the lesson, but checking audio and video beforehand makes sure that we don\u2019t switch to Skype right away.<\/p>\n<h1><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_2_Be_Clear_About_The_Policy\"><\/span>Step 2. Be Clear About The Policy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>It\u2019s company policy that all lessons should be done in the new lesson system. So, if a student asks to use Skype, we can tell them that the decision is not up to us (in other words, feel free to blame it on the company \ud83d\ude09) and suggest that they contact Customer Support for more information.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, most students will understand. After all, the majority who ask to use Skype aren\u2019t totally intent on using it; they just want to see if the tutor will accommodate their request.<\/p>\n<h1><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_3_Make_Use_of_New_Features\"><\/span>Step 3. Make Use of New Features<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>Many students appreciate that the new system keeps tutors and students literally \u201con the same page.\u201d As one student (\ud83c\uddf9\ud83c\uddfc) put it, \u201dWhen I choose a material, I don\u2019t need to tell tutors which material it is since the system makes sure we\u2019re on the same page. Highlighting also makes sure I know exactly where the tutor is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another thing that speaks in favor of the new lesson system is the updated Kids Materials. In response to suggestions from tutors, we\u2019ve recently updated them to make use of all the newly introduced features. The lessons now last longer and are designed to keep kids entertained during the whole 25 minutes. <a href=\"https:\/\/eikaiwa.dmm.com\/app\/lessons\/english-for-kids-english-for-kids-farm-animals\/rv4LxHxUEeenWNPzUv15-g?category_id=Kzf_WsYaEei-YYst1rfvdg&amp;course_id=CWMzsMcNEeiY3csSJTVzIQ#exercise-6\">We\u2019ve also added songs<\/a> and a lot of fun images, like the one below that we created for <a href=\"https:\/\/eikaiwa.dmm.com\/app\/lessons\/english-for-kids-english-for-kids-what-shape-is-this\/lnyuZH3XEeeZs9_3g6wUbA?category_id=Kzf_WsYaEei-YYst1rfvdg&amp;course_id=CWMzsMcNEeiY3csSJTVzIQ\">the lesson on shapes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/09\/06043952\/image2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"488\" height=\"366\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-526\"><\/p>\n<p>And thanks to the new lesson system, when you or the student click on these images, they enlarge on both you and your student\u2019s screens! There are also plenty of interactive quizzes that make use of this feature. For example, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/eikaiwa.dmm.com\/app\/lessons\/english-for-kids-english-for-kids-what-color-is-this\/CMfV_HxcEeeIMXMZ-OpBoA?category_id=Kzf_WsYaEei-YYst1rfvdg&amp;course_id=CWMzsMcNEeiY3csSJTVzIQ#exercise-6\">this exercise<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/09\/06050837\/webRTC-lessons.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"623\" height=\"350\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-531\"><\/p>\n<p>In addition, kids like the new owl emojis so make sure to use them frequently during the lesson, especially as a rewarding system. By making ample use of the new features, we can show students the advantages the new system offers.<\/p>\n<p>With our regular students, we can also talk about how the system simplifies our pre- and post-class tasks. For example, we no longer have to waste time searching for new students on Skype, adding them to our contacts, and opening up materials \u2026 all during our five-minute breaks!<\/p>\n<h1><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%F0%9F%93%8C_Takeaways\"><\/span>\ud83d\udccc Takeaways<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>To recap, here are three steps to getting students on-board with the new lesson system:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Check that the video, audio, and chatbox work.<\/li>\n<li>State that using the new lesson system is company policy.<\/li>\n<li>Show students how great it is!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Of course, the system isn\u2019t perfect and we still have plenty of ideas that\u2019ll come out soon.
