Take a look at these three bars of chocolate. Which one looks easier to eat?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

You probably replied, \u201cthe one on the right.\u201d After all, it\u2019s easier to eat a bar of chocolate when it's divided into regular, bite-size chunks.<\/p>\n

The same goes for language. Have you ever had a student who talked without any pauses? Or a student who paused at strange places? You probably had to ask them to repeat a few times before you could understand what they were saying.<\/p>\n

Improper Chunking Leads to Misunderstandings<\/h1>\n

Besides being difficult to listen to, improper chunking can also cause misunderstandings. For example, a student once told me that she had \u201cthree hour long exams.\u201d I said, \u201cWow! Are these final exams? Why are they so long?\u201d Eventually, I realized she meant that she had \u201cthree hour-long exams\u201d (three exams lasting one hour each).<\/p>\n

The problem was that she pronounced \u201cthree-hour-long exams\u201d as one chunk instead of pausing between \u201cthree\u201d and \u201chour-long exams.\u201d As you can see, when we make mistakes like these, we can actually cause misunderstandings.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s another example: \u201cLet\u2019s eat Grandma.\u201d There are two ways to say this (\u201c\/\u201d = pause):<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Let\u2019s eat \/ Grandma. (pause)<\/li>\n
  2. Let\u2019s eat Grandma. (no pause)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \"\"<\/p>\n

    As you can see, the meaning changes drastically!<\/p>\n

    Teach Chunking During Reading Exercises<\/h1>\n

    It's easiest to work on chunking during reading exercises. When you read sentences aloud for your student to repeat, you can exaggerate the pauses. For example, you can read the sentence, \u201cEggs are a good source of protein,\u201d as follows:<\/p>\n

    \n eggs \/ are a good source of protein
    \n eggs \/ are a good source \/ of protein\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    However, a Japanese or Korean student will most likely read the sentence like this:<\/p>\n

    \n eggs are \/ a good source of \/ protein\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    This happens because Japanese and Korean students are used to ending chunks with little words, since that is what they do in their native languages. This may not sound like a serious mistake, but when combined with other pronunciation mistakes, it leads to sentences that sound like this:<\/p>\n

    \n Egg zarr a good sore soff protein\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    To help students avoid these mistakes, you can explain how these mispronunciations might sound to listeners.<\/p>\n

    Mastery of chunking is key to being understood in English, so make sure to point out mistakes in these areas before moving on to other aspects of pronunciation!<\/p>\n
