While these can be just as confusing for students, they stand out in a unique way and are therefore easier to remember.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though they often sound silly, these word pairs are quite common in daily communication and often in formal ones as well. That means they are important for learners to know. If you're at a loss for how to spend a free-talk lesson, why not introduce these to your students?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wishy-washy\"><\/span><strong>Wishy-washy<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWash\u201d makes us think of water. Although a large amount of water can be strong and heavy, small amounts are thin and quite weak.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This feeling of weakness is the nuance in \"wishy-washy.\" It is used to refer to someone or something that <strong>lacks boldness, strength or determination<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Kate can never seem to make a decision about her career. In either case, it refers to <strong>the most fundamental and important aspects<\/strong> of a situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGrit\u201d is a small piece of something like sand or stone, and it is often what remains when heavy objects have been moved. In this sense, \u201cnitty-gritty\u201d can refer to the foundation or the basics of something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a noun, it\u2019s often used together with \u201cget down to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">We don\u2019t have time to waste, so let\u2019s get down to the nitty-gritty of the problem.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">We hired a consultant to help us deal with the nitty-gritty of starting a business.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dilly-dally\"><\/span><strong>Dilly-dally<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This expression is a verb, and it means to <strong>waste time<\/strong> by doing unimportant things. It comes from the verb \"dally,\" which means to act or move slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">We can't afford to dilly-dally with the deadline so close.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">He's so lazy; all he does is dilly-dally and watch YouTube all day.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Willy-nilly\"><\/span><strong>Willy-nilly<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This rhyming expression is an adverb. The \u201cflip-flop\u201d we're covering here, however, is much different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actually, it's simply a verb that expresses the same idea as wishy-washy (which is an adjective).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFlip-flopping\u201d is deciding on one choice, then <strong>changing your mind <\/strong>and deciding on another, sometimes several times in a row.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Stop flip-flopping and make a decision; are you coming to the event or not?<\/strong><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">The politician was accused of flip-flopping on major issues.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Shilly-shally\"><\/span><strong>Shilly-shally<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This has the same meaning and basic use as flip-flop. This allows two children to take turns moving up and down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Used figuratively, it can refer to feelings or factors that <strong>change over time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Investors were stressed by the stock prices that teeter-tottered all week.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Many of the celebrity\u2019s fans teeter-tottered on whether or not to support her through the scandal.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hem_and_haw\"><\/span><strong>Hem and haw<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This expression is used very similarly to dilly-dally, and refers to <strong>delaying important actions<\/strong> or decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Lots of other people are interested in buying the house, so we don\u2019t have time to hem and haw if we want to buy it ourselves.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Noah is not the kind of person who hems and haws; he can make bold decisions very quickly.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wrap-up\"><\/span><strong>Wrap-up<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are unlikely to find any of the terms introduced here in a textbook or learn them in a standard English lesson at school.
