Instead, we only want to give an idea about something, or say that one thing is similar to something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, there is a very simple and effective tool for this: \"-ish\"!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it's not a word on its own, -ish can be used together with many other words to change their meaning and create a feeling that is less specific or less certain. Depending on how it is used, it can have several different effects, so let's take a closer look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_basics_of_-ish\"><\/span><strong>The basics of -ish<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/01\/31051857\/ish_shutterstock_2630283201-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"A childish young man playing in a park\" class=\"wp-image-7933\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although this article will explain how -ish is added to other words, students should know that some words include it naturally. In these cases, it means \"having the qualities of.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Words like these are often used when discussing nationalities or specific social groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Swedish<\/td><td>Related to or originating in Sweden<\/td><td>i.e., Swedish people<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Danish<\/td><td>Related to or originating in Denmark<\/td><td>i.e., the Danish language<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Turkish<\/td><td>Related to or originating in Turkey<\/td><td>i.e., Turkish architecture<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are other examples as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>childish<\/strong> (meaning \"similar to a child\")<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Stop acting so childish and admit when you're wrong.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>selfish<\/strong> (meaning \"only concerned with oneself\")<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Jack can be really selfish sometimes.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In this usage, -ish changes nouns into adjectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from these standard uses, -ish is also used in a variety of more creative ways.
