Instead, \"lay off\" and \"let go\" are much more commonly used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Due to financial difficulties, we unfortunately had to <strong>lay off<\/strong> a small portion of our workforce.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many employees are worried they will be <strong>let go<\/strong> in the coming months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Unemployed_%3E%3E_Out_of_work_Between_jobs\"><\/span><strong>Unemployed &gt;&gt; Out of work \/ Between jobs<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/zLLOYGIoLt0aHXWwI3z7VXPMS5VNyqnpGPbeIXczT2IR6lk_9o67apYgnqRXLwpP8tk2r2u_7OTx8XHxx4sIZO3SYerPc0QLS6jaqfnL2U3Mzx8a-hjq4e3-isdskh70mA-HfKYoxLQuNRsB_Jdyg-c\" alt=\"A young professional carrying a briefcase while walking down the street\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Someone who has lost their job has become \"unemployed.\" But this word can include negative nuances such as laziness and a lack of effort, which may not actually be true.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A better way to express this is by saying someone is \"out of work,\" which is more neutral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He's been <strong>out of work <\/strong>for about four months now.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>An even more positive alternative is \"between jobs.\" Here, the nuance is that even though someone has lost their previous job, they are actively moving toward the next one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I'm <strong>in between jobs<\/strong> right now, so I'm doing a lot of networking to find new opportunities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fire_%3E%3E_Downsize_Restructure\"><\/span><strong>Fire &gt;&gt; Downsize \/ Restructure<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The previous terms are used when talking about individuals. However, when a company makes big changes that affect a large number of workers, different words are often used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Downsizing\" is reducing the total number of workers, which is a nicer way of saying a significant amount of employees are being fired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We will be <strong>downsizing<\/strong> in order to compete more effectively in the current market.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Restructuring\" is used in a very similar way. It implies that major changes will happen in a company that could result in a large group of workers losing their jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The company is hiring a consultant to assist with the <strong>restructuring<\/strong> necessary to improve profitability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Quit_%3E%3E_Resign_Step_down\"><\/span><strong>Quit &gt;&gt; Resign \/ Step down<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, some workers leave a company or position because of their own choice. \"Quit,\" however, sounds quite direct and harsh.
