class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Let<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allow<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Permit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The only difference between these four is the level of formality, with \"let\" being the least formal and \"permit\" and \"grant\" being the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>My parents won't <strong>let<\/strong> me drive the family car until I pass my driver's test.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The old man doesn't <strong>allow<\/strong> anyone to enter his private property.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Smoking is <strong>permitted<\/strong> only in special areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A gold membership <strong>grants<\/strong> access to exclusive privileges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_few_extra_things_to_note\"><\/span><strong>A few extra things to note<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As in the last example above, students should be aware that these words aren't limited to permission given by <em>people<\/em>; they can also refer to non-living things like objects or even concepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The program won't <strong>let<\/strong> me print the document. What's wrong?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These special glasses <strong>allow<\/strong> you to look at the eclipse without damaging your eyes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Her fame <strong>grants<\/strong> her special treatment at some of the finest restaurants and hotels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While \"let\" is usually followed by both a pronoun and a verb (\"let us enter,\" \"let me leave,\" <a href=\"https:\/\/tutor.engoo.com\/blog\/vocab-expressions\/expressions-students-can-use-instead-of-etc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">etc.<\/a>), it can be followed by a pronoun only if it comes at the end of a sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jane can't come out tonight because her mom won't <strong>let her<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"With_and_without_an_apostrophe\"><\/span><strong>With and without an class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Meaning: to accept or allow<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The client <strong>agreed to<\/strong> our price, so now we have a deal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The actor <strong>consented to<\/strong> his image being used in the ad campaign.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We also say \"have (someone's)
