They can entertain us, educate us and form connections between people with different backgrounds and experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Particularly for tutors, students telling stories means they are speaking more in a lesson rather than relying on their tutor to do the heavy lifting, which is always nice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To both encourage students to tell more stories and to help those stories become more engaging, we've prepared a brief list of words and phrases all storytellers should know. Introduce them in a lesson and see what tales your students can entertain you with!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Suddenly\"><\/span><strong>Suddenly<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Use: when something happens surprisingly or without warning<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Suddenly, the sky got dark and it started to rain.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Next_thing_you_know\"><\/span><strong>Next thing you know<\/strong><span Or tell your own!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Last week, I met Joy and Yuki for lunch at the restaurant on the corner.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Right away<\/strong>, I felt that something was strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the cashier took our orders, we sat at a table near the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Suddenly<\/strong>, we heard loud voices coming from the kitchen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Next thing you know<\/strong>, the whole restaurant was filled with smoke!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fire department had to come to put out the blaze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It turns out<\/strong>, the restaurant's new cook had never worked in a kitchen before and burned our burgers!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Would you believe<\/strong> they still tried to charge us for our food?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wrap-up\"><\/span><strong>Wrap-up<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Making storytelling the focus of a lesson puts students in the spotlight; they must use their memory, creativity and vocabulary to (hopefully) entertain or educate you, their audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask them to tell you about a funny or surprising experience and see how many of these phrases they can use naturally.
