Chances are, it\u2019s not because you\u2019re bad at explaining things. Your explanation probably just didn\u2019t \"click\" with the student.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in Chinese, there\u2019s a version of the word \u201cwhy\u201d that dictionaries translate as \u201cWhy bother...?\u201d. I had known it for a while and could understand it in context, but couldn\u2019t figure out when to use it.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I decided to ask the internet. Some native speakers kindly wrote example sentences for me. This one has stuck with me to this day: \u201cWhy bother learning Chinese? It\u2019s such a ridiculously difficult language!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When I saw that sentence, a light bulb flashed on in my head. Because I could relate to the hopelessness of learning Chinese, I realized what this word actually meant (\u201cWhy are you doing this to yourself?\u201d) and suddenly many other contexts began popping into my head.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/10\/24051346\/familiar-contexts.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"400\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-627\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/10\/24051346\/familiar-contexts.png 624w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/10\/24051346\/familiar-contexts-300x192.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So when we explain new words, we want to make sure we put them in contexts familiar to the student. But what contexts should we use?<\/p>\n<h1><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Students_Interests_and_Jobs\"><\/span>Students\u2019 Interests and Jobs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>During the student\u2019s self-introduction, we usually learn about their hobbies, jobs, and interests. We can tailor our explanations and example sentences to these contexts.<\/p>\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say the student asks you about the word \u201cpass.\u201d If they like playing basketball, you can make the sentence, \u201cI passed the ball to my teammate.\u201d  If your student is a doctor, you can make the sentence, \u201cThe nurse passed the scissors to the surgeon.\u201d If your student likes watching movies, you can make the sentence, \u201cI passed the popcorn to my mom.\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/10\/24051342\/pass.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"623\" height=\"307\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-626\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/10\/24051342\/pass.png 623w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/10\/24051342\/pass-300x148.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If the student has trouble understanding what <em>impressive<\/em> means, you can make sentences like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThis basketball player is very <em>impressive<\/em>; he scored a triple-double in the last three games!\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThis doctor is <em>impressive<\/em>. He\u2019s not only a great doctor, but can also talk to his patients in many languages.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThis director is really <em>impressive<\/em>! His last five movies went through the roof with the ticket sales!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can always search online to find out how to use the word in a specific context. (For example, I personally don\u2019t know much about what makes a director impressive, so I looked up \u201cimpressive directors\u201d when making that last sentence.)<\/p>\n<h1><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Language-Learning\"><\/span>Language-Learning<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>Language-learning (especially how hard it is!) is another context that all our students can relate to. Let\u2019s say your student asks you about the word, <em>frustrating.<\/em> You can make sentences like \u201cLearning vocabulary is so <em>frustrating<\/em>. I\u2019ll look up a new word and then forget it immediately!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s try with some words that may seem harder to relate to language-learning.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>barely<\/em> \u2192 \u201cA tourist asked me for directions today, and I <em>barely<\/em> understood what he was saying.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>a while<\/em> \u2192 You can make a sentence like, \u201cI\u2019ve been learning English for <em>a while<\/em>, but I still can\u2019t speak it.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Feel free to make sentences about the joys of learning a language also!)<\/p>\n<h1><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tutoring\"><\/span>Tutoring<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>All of our students are also familiar with tutoring, so applying new words to tutoring-related contexts can also help them understand the word better.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/10\/24051331\/tutoring.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"298\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-624\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/10\/24051331\/tutoring.png 400w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/10\/24051331\/tutoring-300x224.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say your student wants to know how to use the word <em>encourage<\/em>. You can tell a story like, \u201cThe student asked the teacher for advice on learning vocabulary. The teacher <em>encouraged<\/em> them to make sentences with the new words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the word <em>intimidated<\/em>, you can make a sentence like, \u201cI felt <em>intimidated<\/em> when I started taking lessons online.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s try some words that seem unrelated to tutoring:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>unfounded<\/em> \u2192 \u201cI was so scared that tutors would judge my English. But after taking a few lessons, I realized that my fears were <em>unfounded<\/em>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>feel like<\/em> \u2192 \u201cWhen I take lessons with tutors from different countries, I <em>feel like<\/em> I\u2019m traveling!\u201d, can help your student understand the phrase better.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pet_Peeves\"><\/span>Pet Peeves<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>Pet peeves are things that someone finds particularly annoying. My biggest pet peeve is mosquitoes, and recently I\u2019ve found it helpful to Google new vocabulary that goes along with the word <em>mosquito<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>For example, I Googled \u201cmosquito\u201d and a Chinese word that roughly translates to \u201cstubborn\u201d and got the results like, \u201cstubborn insect infestations\u201d and \u201ca stubborn mosquito that won\u2019t leave my room\u201d and the word has stuck with me ever since.<\/p>\n<p>So it can be helpful to tailor example sentences to students\u2019 pet peeves!<\/p>\n<h1><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Current_Events\"><\/span>Current Events<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>Finally, another context that may be familiar to your students is current events.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/10\/24052450\/current-events-1024x531.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"332\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/10\/24052450\/current-events-1024x531.png 1024w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/10\/24052450\/current-events-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/10\/24052450\/current-events-768x398.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Maybe your student learned the word <em>plummeted<\/em> in the context of prices plummeting but they still don\u2019t quite understand how to use it and ask, \u201cCan you use this word in other contexts?\u201d Since there are always some scandals surrounding the celebrities, you can use the latest one and say that \u201ctheir popularity plummeted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And even if your student hasn\u2019t heard of the scandal you\u2019re talking about, this example should still make sense to them. So if you can\u2019t connect a word to the student\u2019s interests, language-learning, or tutoring, you can use current events as inspiration for your example sentences.<\/p>\n<h1><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%F0%9F%93%8C_Takeaways\"><\/span>\ud83d\udccc Takeaways<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>As we\u2019ve discussed, applying new vocabulary to the following contexts helps them better understand the words and figure out how to use them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>job and interests<\/li>\n<li>the pains (and joys!) of language-learning<\/li>\n<li>tutoring<\/li>\n<li>pet peeves<\/li>\n<li>current events<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Which of these do you think you\u2019ll try?
